Historical information
While Iowa received the first Carnegie-funded library west of the Mississippi, ultimately receiving the 4th highest number of grants and the 3rd highest number of academic grants, it did so without a lot of active support from the Iowa Library Commission, and its Secretary, Alice S. Tyler. This was in contrast with Illinois, which received more grants but did not have a Library Commission until much later. The numbers for other neighboring states vary widely, and this space will eventually allow for more in-depth comparisons of the correlations between state-sponsored support and individual community efforts.
