Dr. Geo. W. Baker was born in Mount Vernon, Indiana on the 4th day of May, 1821. He came to Davenport, Iowa, in 1836 and founded the town of Buffalo, a few miles south of Davenport, where he was married to Marie Clark, to which union were born three children; two boys and one girl. The sons are: Warren E. Baker, Los Angeles, Cal. and Dr. Clarence C. Baker, of San Francisco, Cal., the daughter is deceased. From Buffalo, Dr. Baker moved for a time to Burlington, and from thence to Ottumwa,
until 1852, when he came to Decatur County, making his home at Decatur City where he enjoyed a good drug business and medical practice. While at Decatur City, Mrs. Baker died. In 1862 he was married to Susan Warner Huffman, and at that time moved to Leon where he has since made his home, and continued a general practice of medicine until about fifteen years ago. To this latter union were born two sons, Attorney Geo. W. Baker and James I. Baker, of St. John, Wash., both of whom were present.
Dr. Baker united with the Christian Church at Leon in 1863, where he was a valued member, always faithful to the interests of the Church. He was a member of the official board for some time and was an Elder as well. For months he had been in declining health, but the end came very suddenly on Sunday morning, January 10, 1909, at his home in Leon, in his 88th year. [1]
