Frank Eugene Furry was the son of Joseph Furry and Sarah Regina Stancliffe. He was born in Eldora, Iowa on October 13, 1858. He grew up in the nearby town of Alden after his family moved in 1864. He first attended school when he was 9 yrs old, getting most of his former education from his mother. He entered college and at the age of 19 started teaching during the winter since he attended a agricultural college which only ran in the summer. In 1881 Frank Furry was 1 of 21 students to graduate from Iowa State University in Ames. He achieved a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He would then accept a job at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he would meet a woman named Katherine Smith. They would get married in her parents Amos and Eunice’s house on March 29, 1884. Soon after the marriage they would move back to Alden where he would work with his brother Mark Furry as an editor of the Alden Times. He would be associated with the paper for 26 years until his brothers death. It would later be transferred to Mark’s son. After that he was the manager for the Alden Telephone company during its construction and for 20 years after. He lost a lot of his money during the Great Depression. Because of that he would move to LIberty, Mo to live with his daughter Genevieve and her husband.
