Twelfth Census of the United States — 1900. p. 451.
Webster City is the county seat of Hamilton County, which was established on December 22, 1856. Hamilton County was named in honor of Senator William W. Hamilton, who had served as the President of the Iowa Senate from 1856-1857. Originally, the county had been named Risley, but on January 12, 1853, the name was changed to Webster which also absorbed Yell County. On December 22, 1856, Webster County was divided, and the eastern part was named Hamilton. Webster City was designated the county seat of Hamilton County at that time.
