Centerville is the county seat of Appanoose County, which was established on jFebruary 17, 1843. Appanoose was named in honor of the Chief of the Sac and Fox Tribes who was involved in the peace process after the Black Hawk War. The county seat was originally named Chaldea, which was then changed to Senterville (after Governor Senter of Tennessee), and then changed to Centerville in 1847.
