Twelfth Census of the United States — 1900. p. 448.
Anamosa is the county seat of Jones County, which was established on December 21, 1837. Jones County was named for George Wallace Jones who served as a United States Senator from Iowa from 1848-1859. Anamosa became the third county seat, after Edinburgh and Newport, on June 11, 1847. The town had originally been named Lexington, but was renamed Anamosa (White Fawn) in honor of the daughter of the Winnebago Chief, Nas-i-nus.
