Boone is the county seat of Boone County, which was established on January 13, 1846. The county was named for Captain Nathan Boone (1782-1863), the youngest son of Danield Boone who had surveyed the areas of central Iowa between 1830 and 1835. The first county seat was established in Boonesboro in 1856. In 1871, the county seat was moved to Montana, which was renamed Boone.
