Cornell College is a town in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Mount Vernon is a town in Linn County, which was established on December 21, 1837. The county was named for Lewis Fields Linn (1795-1843), a Senator from Missouri who was involved in the creation of the Wisconsin Territory. In 1839, the first county seat was established in Marion, so it would have been the county seat at the time of the Carnegie grant. In 1919, the county seat was moved from Marion to Cedar Rapids. Mount Vernon, Marion and Cedar Rapids received Carnegie grants.
