Upper Iowa University is in Fayette, Iowa, which is a town in Fayette County, which was established on December 21, 1837. Fayette county is named after Marquis de LaFayette (1757-1834) who was a friend of the American Colonies who participated in the Revolutionary war. After two elections, West Union was declared the county seat in May 1851.
