Twelfth Census of the United States — 1900. p. 449.
Jefferson is the county seat of Greene County, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named for General Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) who was a leader during the Revolutionary War. In 1854, the town of Jefferson, named for the third President of the United States, was selected as the county seat. It was originally called New Jefferson, as there was another town by the name of Jefferson in Dubuque County, but by 1872, the “New” designation was no longer necessary.
