Mount Pleasant is the county seat of Henry County, which was established on December 7, 1836. The county may have been named for either Henry Dodge (1782-1867) who had served as a governor of the Wisconsin Territory (1836-1841) or General James Dougherty Henry (1797-1834) who fought in the Black Hawk War. By 1836, Mount Pleasant was chosen as the county seat when it was part of the Territory of Wisconsin, and despite some opposition, it retained the designation from 1837 onward.
