Cedar Rapids is the county seat of Linn County, which was established on December 21, 1837. The county was named for Lewis Fields Linn (1795-1843) who was a Senator from Missouri who was involved in the creation of the Wisconsin Territory. In 1839, the first county seat was established in Marion. In 1919, the county seat was moved from Marion to Cedar Rapids. In Linn County, both Cedar Rapids and Marion received Carnegie grants.
