Cedar Falls is in Black Hawk County, which was established on Febraury 17, 1843. Black Hawk was named in honor of the Chief of the Fox and Sac Tribes. The county seat is Waterloo. Cedar Falls, originally named Sturgis Falls, was founded in 1851, and served as the county seat from 1853-1855, before the seat moved to Waterloo. Black Hawk County received two Carnegie grants for the towns of Cedar Falls and Waterloo.
