Atlantic is the county seat of Cass County, which was established on January 15, 1851. Cass County was named for Lewis Cass (1782-1866) who had been a Michigan Senator, and had been a Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1848. The first county seat was established at a town named Lewis, but in 1869, the seat was moved to Atlantic.
