Bedford is the county seat of Taylor County, which was established on February 24, 1847. Taylor County was named for General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), who at the time was in command of the army in the war with Mexico. In 1849, Taylor became the twelfth President of the United States. In 1853, Bedford was established as the county seat.
