Cherokee is the county seat of Cherokee County, which was established on January 15, 1851. Both the county and the county seat were named for the Cherokee Tribe. In 1861, the county seat of Cherokee was established. In 1871, the site was moved slightly because of the location of the Dubuque and Sioux City rail line.
