Clear Lake is in the county of Cerro Gordo, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named for the site where General Winfield Scott defeated the forces of General Santa Ana in the Mexican War in 1847. In 1855, Mason City was selected as the county seat. In Cerro Gordo County, both Clear Lake and Mason City received Carnegie grants.
