Colfax is a town in Jasper County, which was established on January 13, 1846. Jasper County was named in honor of Sergeant William Jasper (1750-1779), who fought in the Revolutionary War. In 1846, the county seat was established at Newton City, which was changed to Newton in 1847. In Jasper County, both Colfax and Newton received Carnegie grants.
