Denison is the county seat of Crawford County, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named for William Harris Crawford (1772-1834) who was a Georgia Senator, and who served the government in a variety of capacities, and was a presidential candidate in 1824. Denison was named for Jesse W. Denison who was a Baptist minister, and because the town was located near the center of the county, it was made the the county seat in 1856.
