DeWitt is a town in Clinton County, which was established on December 21, 1837. In 1840, the county seat was first situated at Camanche, but in 1842, the seat was moved to Vandenburg, which was then renamed DeWitt. In 1869, the county seat moved from DeWitt to the city of Clinton. In Clinton County, both DeWitt and Clinton received Carnegie grants.
