Estherville is the county seat of Emmet County, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named for Robert Emmet (1778-1803) who was active in the Irish rebellion. Estherville was named for Esther Ridley who was one of the first Caucasian settlers. In 1859, the town became the county seat.
