Hampton is the county seat of Franklin County, which was established on January 15, 1851. Franklin County is named for Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) who served as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first county seat was called Jefferson, but in 1856, voters moved the location to the town of Benjamin which was then renamed Hampton.
