Humboldt is a town in Humboldt County, which was established on February 26, 1857. The county was named for the German explorer and statesman, Baron Friedrich von Humboldt (1769-1859). In 1856, the county seat was established at Dakota City, which was named for the Dakota Native American Tribe.
