Knoxville is the county seat of Marion County, which was established on June 10,1845. The county was named for General Francis Marion (1732-1795) who served in the Revolutionary War. In 1845, Knoxville was designated as the county seat. Another Revolutionary War hero, General Henry Knox, was the namesake of the town. Marion County received two Carnegie grants for the towns of Knoxville and Pella.
