Leon is the county seat of Decatur County, which was established on January 13, 1846. The county was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820) who served in the War of 1812. In 1851, the county seat was located in a town named Decatur or Decatur City. In 1853, an election moved the county seat to the more centrally located town of Independence, which was subsequently renamed South Independence. In 1855, the town was renamed Leon.
