Mount Ayr is the county seat of Ringgold County, which was established on February 24, 1847. The county was named in honor of Major Samuel B. Ringgold, who was killed in 1846 in the Mexican War. After two early attempts to locat the county seat in Avon, and in Urbana, in 1855, a site was chosen that was named Mount Ayr; Ayre, Scotland was the birthplace of Robert Burns (1759-1796).
