Osage is the county seat of Mitchell County, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county may have been named for the Irish patriot, John M. Mitchell, or a surveyor of the county named Mitchell. In 1855, the county seat was located in the town of Mitchell, but by 1856, the seat had moved to the town of Osage, which was named for the Massachusetts philanthropist Orrin Sage.
