Sigourney is the county seat of Keokuk County, which was established on December 21, 1837. The county was named for Chief Keokuk of the Sac Tribe. In 1844, the site for the town of Sigourney was chosen. Sigourney was named in honor of the Connecticut poet, Lydia H. Sigourney (1791-1865).
