Traer is a town in Tama County, which was established on February 17, 1843. The name of the county was derived from a name related to the Fox Tribe, although the specific source is unclear. In 1853, the county seat was situated at Toledo. Tama County received two Carnegie grants for the towns of Traer and Tama.
